Syrian Forces Successfully Thwart Kurdish Militia Assault in Deir al-Zour

Damascus, Dec 3 (NationPress) Syrian government troops successfully thwarted an advance attempt by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, according to reports from pro-government media.
Field sources in Deir al-Zour informed Al-Watan Online, a pro-government news platform, that local residents and tribal fighters collaborated with the Syrian army to repel the SDF’s offensive, which was allegedly supported by the U.S.-led international coalition. It was noted that normalcy has returned to the seven villages involved in the conflict.
Following the failure of their assault, the SDF militants have reportedly started seeking mediation to restore the truce and ceasefire, according to the report. It was also mentioned that SDF units are currently regrouping in the al-Ma'amal area, located north of Deir al-Zour.
Furthermore, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group based in Britain, previously reported that intense clashes erupted between the SDF's Deir al-Zour Military Council, which received support from local tribal fighters, and Syrian government forces alongside Iranian-backed militias.
The Observatory highlighted that the confrontations were primarily focused around the “Seven Villages” area in rural Deir al-Zour, where both factions engaged in heavy combat. However, no significant territorial advancements were reported despite the fierce fighting.
In an escalation of hostilities, aircraft from the U.S.-led coalition carried out numerous airstrikes targeting positions held by Iranian-backed militias in the region, as reported by the Observatory and covered by the Xinhua news agency.
Earlier on Tuesday, a young girl was reportedly killed, and three other civilians from the same family sustained injuries due to artillery shells fired by Iranian-backed militias that struck the village of Jadeed Akidat, which is also under SDF control, according to the Observatory.
This latest escalation highlights the complex dynamics in eastern Syria, where various factions—including Syrian government forces, Iranian-backed militias, Kurdish-led groups, and international players—are competing for control over strategic territories rich in oil resources.
Simultaneously, rebel fighters in northern Syria continue to engage in battles against government forces for territorial gains, reminiscent of the intense conflicts witnessed during the early years of the Syrian war.
