Syrian Refugees Discover New Beginnings and Aspirations in Egypt

Cairo, Dec 25 (NationPress) Ahmed Enaba, a skilled chef specializing in the Middle Eastern delicacy Shawarma and originally from Syria, commenced a fresh chapter in his life in Egypt in 2016 by opening a restaurant in October City, a lively area close to Cairo.

His culinary offerings, blending Syrian tastes with Egyptian hospitality, quickly captivated the local community, transforming his restaurant into a beloved gathering place.

"I have always envisioned owning my own establishment," expressed Enaba, a 32-year-old beaming with pride. "It truly feels like a blessing to see my dream materialize here in Egypt."

A militant coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham initiated a significant military campaign from northern Syria on November 27, advancing southward, capturing Damascus, and dismantling the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad within a span of 12 days.

In light of the recent political changes in Syria, Enaba has felt a growing connection to his native city, Aleppo. However, he has already established a profound life in Egypt that he treasures. "This is my home now. I have constructed a life and a promising future here," he stated.

Despite this, his heart remains linked to Syria, and he dreams of a time when he can aid in its restoration by opening a branch of his restaurant in Aleppo once the situation stabilizes.

"I aspire to be a part of the solution to restore jobs and hope to my people," he declared, his determination evident. To achieve this, Enaba plans to divide his time between Egypt and Syria, nurturing his businesses while supporting both communities.

"Egypt has provided me with so much, but I also wish to give back to Syria," he remarked.

Upon arriving in Egypt, often referred to as "the gift of the Nile," Enaba was profoundly moved by the warmth of the Egyptian people, who welcomed him with open arms.

"I was taken aback by their generosity," Enaba reminisced. "They embraced me like family. I found employment swiftly, and with the backing of the local community and government resources, I was able to set up my restaurant."

Enaba treasures the bonds he has formed with Egyptian colleagues and patrons, sharing laughter and stories over plates of freshly made Shawarma. "I will always remember the kindness shown to me by the Egyptian people," he said earnestly.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, Egypt is home to approximately 9 million migrants and refugees, including 1.5 million Syrians. Among them is Khaled Omar, who has been residing on the other side of Greater Cairo for the past decade.

Omar, a Syrian tailor with a flair for design, has also built a thriving life in Egypt. His wedding dress boutique, located in the bustling downtown area, serves as a hub of creativity and craftsmanship.

"I invest my heart into each dress," Omar, a 38-year-old father of three, shared with the Xinhua news agency. "Every piece is a dream realized."

"Cairo has treated me well. I have established a prosperous business and a fulfilling life here," Omar stated.

Nevertheless, the recent events in Syria have reignited his longing to return to his cherished hometown of Damascus.

"Damascus is ingrained in my very being," he said, his voice filled with nostalgia. "I can almost sense the aroma of my mother’s cooking wafting through our home in Damascus."

He envisions strolling through familiar streets, breathing in the intimate scents of spices and jasmine, reuniting with his family after years of separation, and playing a role in the reconstruction of his war-torn city.

"I want to contribute to its revival," he said, already contemplating how he can support Syria's economy upon his return. "Perhaps I will establish a workshop in Damascus. I might share my expertise and create job opportunities."

Omar expressed that his heart will always hold a special affection for Egypt. "I will never forget the kindness I have received here. This is my second home, and I will always treasure it," he said.

Omar is especially thankful for the opportunities he found in Egypt, where he felt welcomed and supported from the moment he arrived. He credited Egypt for granting him the freedom to live and work, build a life and career, and integrate into society.

"Egypt has allowed me to rebuild my life. I was able to live like any other Egyptian, without restrictions, and for that, I am eternally grateful," he stated, warmth evident in his voice.
