Syria's Interim FM Reaffirms Commitment to Building Positive Regional Relations

Damascus, Jan 6 (NationPress) Syria's interim Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani reaffirmed the nation's dedication to cultivating positive foreign relations throughout the region.

In a series of statements on the social media platform X, al-Shibani highlighted that Syria's new administration will implement foreign policies that significantly diverge from those of the prior government.

His comments followed discussions with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Qatari Minister of State at the Foreign Ministry Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi in Doha, which al-Shibani characterized as "thorough and extensive," according to Xinhua news agency.

Al-Shibani detailed that critical strategic matters were addressed and a framework for reconstructing Syria and empowering its citizens was proposed during these discussions. "We aim to establish a Syrian government that represents all sectors of society," he stated.

He praised Qatar's significant role in assisting Syrians during the recent turmoil and in the ongoing phase of Syria's reconstruction, referring to the Gulf state as a strategic partner.

Al-Shibani also emphasized Damascus's intention to "restore relations with the Arab and international community," moving away from what he termed the "previous regime's approach," and asserted that Syria seeks peaceful and cooperative relations that promote principles of justice, freedom, and equality for every citizen.

The minister additionally called on the United States to lift sanctions on the Syrian populace, which he claimed primarily hinder the advancement of a "new Syria."

Al-Shibani, leading a high-level Syrian delegation that includes Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab, arrived in Qatar on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations and strategies to stabilize Syria amidst ongoing regional challenges.

This past Friday, in a post on X following his return from a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, al-Shibani announced plans to visit Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan in the upcoming week to enhance Syria's stability, security, and economic recovery.
