Kuala Lumpur, Aug 5 (NationPress) Thailand and Cambodia have shown a firm dedication to resolving conflicts during discussions at the secretariat level, according to Malaysia's Chief of Defence Forces, General Mohd Nizam Jaffar.
The dialogues, taking place from August 4 to 6 in anticipation of an extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on August 7, will also address the guidelines for forming an ASEAN defense attaché monitoring team, General Mohd Nizam stated on Monday.
"Currently, Thailand and Cambodia are engaged in talks concerning the conditions for the team's deployment. If discussions proceed positively, we anticipate a favorable outcome by Thursday," he informed reporters following meetings with heads of both secretariats.
He emphasized that Malaysia's role is solely as a facilitator before the extraordinary meeting, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In a related note, a spokesperson from Cambodia's defense ministry indicated on Monday that Thai troops had breached Cambodian territory by installing barbed wire, despite strong protests from Cambodian military forces.
Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, the Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for the Defense Ministry, stated that this act is a blatant violation of the ceasefire, creating significant risks for peace and security along the border, as well as for the broader region.
"Cambodia appeals to the international community, especially nations that have worked diligently to secure this hard-won ceasefire, to urge Thailand to cease its aggressive actions and to uphold international law, particularly regarding Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Socheata added.
Responding to Cambodia's claims of military incursions into an area it refers to as "An Sae," the Thai Army clarified on Monday through the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs that this region is known as "Chong An Ma," which is within Thailand's territory.
The Thai Army asserted that Cambodia has previously violated this area by building unauthorized structures. The Thai government has lodged multiple formal protests against these incursions, none of which have led to corrective measures from Cambodia.
In recent operations, Thai forces have reasserted full control over Chong An Ma, implementing security reinforcements and restoring order, including the clearance of landmines, as reported by the Thai Army.
Following armed clashes between Cambodian and Thai soldiers along their disputed border on July 24, a ceasefire was agreed upon on July 28, taking effect at midnight the same day.
