Phnom Penh, Aug 1 (NationPress) Cambodia has expressed its support for Thailand's initiative to engage in discussions regarding border matters in Malaysia next week, as stated by a spokesperson from the Cambodian Defence Ministry on Friday.
"This is an excellent opportunity for us to affirm that Cambodia welcomes Thailand's suggestion to convene a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) in Kuala Lumpur," said Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, the Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, during a press briefing.
"We are optimistic that this gathering will be productive and lead to positive results," she added.
As reported by the Xinhua news agency, the meeting will see participation from Cambodia's Defence Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand's Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit.
The spokesperson from Thailand's Ministry of Defence announced on social media that Deputy Minister Nattaphon has officially accepted Cambodia's invitation for the special GBC meeting.
In his response, Nattaphon expressed enthusiasm for the meeting and underscored a mutual commitment to easing tensions and addressing border security challenges through peaceful and constructive dialogue.
Previously, on July 24, there were armed confrontations between Cambodian and Thai troops along the contested border. A ceasefire was agreed upon on July 28, which took effect at midnight.
On Wednesday, observation teams were dispatched to oversee the ceasefire agreement's implementation between Cambodia and Thailand.
Socheata mentioned in the briefing that Malaysia, currently chairing ASEAN, sent a high-level delegation led by its Chief of Defence Forces, General Datuk Haji Mohd Nizam Bin Haji Jaffar, to Cambodia on Tuesday.
According to the spokesperson, the head of the Malaysian defence forces indicated that two observation teams would be operational—one led by the Malaysian military attache in Cambodia and the other by the military attache in Thailand.
