Phnom Penh, Aug 3 (NationPress) An ASEAN interim observer group commenced its second round of inspections on Sunday, focusing on the areas affected by conflict along the Cambodia-Thailand border. This two-week inspection was highlighted by a Cambodian defence spokesperson.
Guided by the military attache from ASEAN's current chair, Malaysia, the group comprises defence attaches from Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for Cambodia's Defence Ministry, stated that the team will assess multiple sites in Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces to oversee the implementation of a recently agreed ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.
"The involvement of these partner nations illustrates a mutual aspiration for a successful and enduring ceasefire, aiming to restore peace, stability, cooperation, and development for both nations' citizens," she conveyed during a press briefing.
Following armed confrontations on July 24 between Cambodian and Thai troops in border regions, both nations reached an immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement on the afternoon of July 28, effective from midnight.
In addition, Cambodia expressed its approval of Thailand's suggestion to discuss border matters in Malaysia next week, according to a spokesperson from the Cambodian defence ministry.
"I would like to confirm Cambodia's welcoming stance towards Thailand's proposal for a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur," said Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata during a press briefing.
"We are optimistic that this meeting will be productive and lead to positive results," she added.
As per Socheata, Cambodia's Defence Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand's Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit are slated to participate in the forthcoming discussions. Thailand's Ministry of Defence spokesperson announced on social media that Deputy Minister Nattaphon had officially accepted Cambodia's invitation for a special GBC meeting.
In his response, Nattaphon expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to participate and reaffirmed a shared commitment to de-escalate tensions and address border security issues through peaceful and constructive dialogue.
