The Netherlands Implements Additional Border Checks for Six Months

The Hague, Dec 10 (NationPress) The Netherlands has enhanced border controls as of Monday to support the government’s initiatives aimed at tackling irregular migration and human trafficking.
Minister of Asylum and Migration Marjolein Faber informed Dutch RTL News, saying, "This measure is designed to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants into the Netherlands. It is not simply a symbolic gesture; it will certainly yield results and may serve as a deterrent."
Faber had revealed in November that these fortified border checks, which commenced on December 9, will be in effect for a duration of six months, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The statement noted that these controls would be carried out in a manner that minimizes disruptions to economic and commuter traffic in areas near the border.
At airports, the checks will focus on specific flights deemed to pose a risk of irregular migration or cross-border crime, according to the announcement.
This decision by the Netherlands follows Germany's reinstatement of passport checks at all land borders in September, aimed at curtailing irregular migration, threats of terrorism, and cross-border organized crime.
The Netherlands shares its land borders with Germany to the east and Belgium to the south.
