Three IS Fighters Eliminated in Iraq

Baghdad, Dec 6 (NationPress) Three members of the Islamic State (IS), including a prominent leader, were neutralized during two operations in Iraq, as reported by Iraqi security agencies on Friday.

Following intelligence assessments and a period of extensive surveillance, security forces identified two IS militants in the Hamrin mountain region situated in the northern area of Diyala. They engaged in combat after encircling them, as detailed by the Iraqi Interior Ministry in an official statement.

The statement indicated that this operation resulted in the elimination of both militants, one of whom was equipped with an explosive belt, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

In an unrelated incident, security forces successfully ambushed a senior IS leader, killing him in the Hamrin mountain area of Salahudin province, according to a source from the provincial police command who requested anonymity.

The authorities confiscated weapons, ammunition, and various documents during these operations, the source noted.

While the security situation in Iraq has seen improvements since the defeat of IS in 2017, remnants of the group have infiltrated urban areas, deserts, and challenging terrains, executing frequent guerrilla assaults on both security personnel and civilians.
