Chicago, Dec 15 (NationPress) Trade, artificial intelligence, and the significance of diaspora media are pivotal topics shaping the relationship between the world's two largest democracies. Esteemed community leaders, business professionals, and diplomats gathered to discuss the future of India-US ties in this bustling city on Sunday.

Ankit Jain from the US–India Strategic Partnership Forum characterized the bilateral relationship as “a long-lasting marriage — filled with commitment but lacking drama.”

He highlighted that trade relations remain robust despite political challenges, noting, “India stands as the largest trade partner with over $200 billion.” He further mentioned that US corporations continue to invest significantly in India, referencing recent commitments from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

During a panel discussion at the India Abroad Dialogue, Jain cautioned that elevated tariffs could adversely affect both economies. “It is illogical to impose a 50 percent tariff on India,” he stressed, pointing to potential repercussions on small and medium enterprises and inflation in the US.

Debesh Kumar Behera, Counsellor for Community Affairs and Security at the Indian Embassy, shared insights on India’s forthcoming AI summit aimed at fostering open-source innovation and enhancing indigenous capabilities. “Utilizing more open-source technology will benefit the community,” he stated, emphasizing India’s focus on data centers, quantum computing, and domestic AI frameworks.

Community leaders underscored the diaspora’s critical role as an economic and cultural link. “We represent the strongest community in terms of AI development,” asserted Amitabh Mittal, a prominent community figure and entrepreneur, advocating for closer collaboration between emerging Indian American innovators and India’s tech ecosystem.

The responsibility of media was also a major topic of discussion. Vandana Jhingan, a leader in community media, cautioned that misinformation and “yellow journalism” are undermining public trust. “With everyone carrying a smartphone, they assume the role of reporters,” she remarked, stressing that responsible journalism entails verification over mere narratives.

She emphasized the need for stronger community support for ethnic media. “While editorial teams have their responsibilities, publishers also need financial backing,” she urged, calling on businesses to support reliable diaspora outlets.

Participants also explored topics such as defense manufacturing, semiconductors, and space technology, noting the increasing potential for collaborative efforts. “There are over 3,600 smaller organizations in the US engaged in defense and space sectors, many led by next-generation Indian Americans,” pointed out community leader and entrepreneur Nirav Patel.

The discussion wrapped up with a call for ongoing engagement amid political uncertainties. “This is neither the worst nor the best of times,” remarked one speaker. “It is simply time.”

Over the past decade, India and the United States have enhanced their cooperation in defense, technology, and education. As both nations navigate political changes, diaspora leaders maintain that enduring people-to-people connections will serve as a stabilizing influence.
