Sydney, May 15 (NationPress) Tragedy struck northern Australia on Wednesday as two individuals lost their lives and four others sustained injuries from two separate traffic incidents occurring within a few hours, according to police reports released on Thursday.

The Queensland police stated that emergency services rushed to a highway close to the rural area of Breddan, located over 1,000 km northwest of Brisbane, shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Wednesday, following a head-on collision between two vehicles traveling in opposite directions.

In one of the vehicles involved, a woman in her 50s was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver, also in his 50s, was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

The other vehicle's driver, a woman in her 40s, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Earlier that day, less than an hour and a half prior, police and emergency services responded to a three-vehicle accident near Bajool, approximately 500 km northwest of Brisbane.

The Queensland Police Service detailed that an SUV heading south on the Bruce Highway, a key route linking Brisbane to northern areas of the state, collided with a northbound white pickup truck.

A grey pickup truck, also moving north, subsequently crashed into the white pickup.

A 24-year-old man, who was driving the SUV, was declared dead at the scene. The drivers of both pickup trucks were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Authorities revealed that the forensic crash unit is currently investigating both incidents.

Australia is currently observing National Road Safety Week, which aims to raise awareness about the effects of road trauma and the necessity for safe driving practices.

In the southeastern state of Victoria, the grim statistic of 11 fatalities on the roads was recorded within a five-day period, pushing the state's 2025 road death count to 114, compared to 102 at the same time last year.

A significant road safety operation conducted by Victoria Police on Monday identified 930 traffic violations, including 530 instances of speeding.

"Given the ongoing National Road Safety Week and the alarming number of fatalities on our roads recently, we strongly encourage everyone to prioritize safety and, most importantly, reduce speed," stated Glenn Weir, Victoria's road policing assistant commissioner, in a press release on Wednesday.
