Tragic Downpour Claims Five Lives in Mombasa, Kenya

Nairobi, Dec 3 (NationPress) A tragic incident occurred in the coastal city of Mombasa, where five individuals lost their lives due to intense rainfall, local officials have reported.
Ebrahim Basafar, the chief fire officer of Mombasa County, communicated with Xinhua news agency, stating that the fatalities were caused when a perimeter wall collapsed on them as a result of the heavy downpour on Monday.
"Emergency responders were alerted by a resident about the wall collapse amidst the rain, and upon arrival, we discovered three individuals had already perished at the scene, while two more succumbed to their injuries at the hospital," Basafar disclosed, mentioning that a child was among those who died.
This incident occurred just days after the government issued flood warnings due to the relentless rains affecting various regions of East Africa. The ongoing precipitation has caused significant destruction, displacing hundreds as rivers in western Kenya overflowed their banks.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has indicated that the short rainy season, which commenced in October, is set to conclude later this month, with predictions of above-average rainfall across numerous areas of the country.
This year, the atypical seasonal rains, exacerbated by the El Nino weather phenomenon, have led to significant turmoil throughout Kenya, a nation particularly susceptible to climate change.
From March to June, more than 300 individuals lost their lives, 188 were injured, and 38 were reported missing due to the heavy rains and flooding. Additionally, over 293,200 people were displaced, and nearly 306,520 individuals were affected according to the Kenya National Disaster Operation Center.
