Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Monday, 10 August described his first meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka as 'fruitful', saying the two neighbours not only share a border but also 'share dreams.' The meetings — held separately with Rahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed — covered bilateral partnership, people-centric engagement, and security cooperation.

Key Developments from the Dhaka Meetings

Trivedi held back-to-back bilateral sessions with Bangladesh's top leadership. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka confirmed on X that the envoy conveyed India's intent to work with the Bangladeshi government and people in a 'positive, constructive and forward-looking manner.' The two sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed avenues to further strengthen bilateral relations with a people-centric approach.

Following his meeting with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, the High Commission posted that discussions covered areas of common interest, including security cooperation, and that Trivedi conveyed India's willingness to strengthen people-centric cooperation across all domains, 'based on mutual interest, mutual benefit and mutual sensitivities.'

What the Indian Envoy Said

Addressing reporters after the meeting with Rahman, Trivedi struck a notably informal tone, characterising the interaction as one between two public representatives rather than a formal diplomatic engagement. 'I am not a diplomat. It's like people's representative to people's representative. I am very delighted that we have met. I didn't feel that I met him for the first time. Very good, very humble, on the ground, what will be the discussion — people-to-people relations,' Trivedi was quoted as saying by leading Bangladeshi media outlet UNB.

He also expressed optimism that all outstanding issues between the two countries can be resolved. 'There will be issues in democracies. It's not democracy if there is no issue. But there is only one people's issue, which is good relations. It's a win-win situation if there is a good relationship,' he added.

Modi-Rahman Meeting on the Horizon

Trivedi said India is looking forward to a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tarique Rahman, expressing confidence that a bilateral summit would help address outstanding concerns. 'Our invitation is there in place. We are positive that if the two leaders meet together, there will be discussion,' he said.

Notably, Trivedi declined to confirm whether Rahman would attend the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled in New Delhi in September. Last week, India had confirmed that Rahman was invited to the session in his capacity as the current Chair of BIMSTEC.

Context: India-Bangladesh Ties at a Reset Moment

This comes amid a broader recalibration of India-Bangladesh relations following political changes in Dhaka. The emphasis on people-centric engagement and security cooperation signals New Delhi's intent to maintain strategic depth with its eastern neighbour.
