Trump Advocates for Federal Ban on Licenses for Undocumented Drivers After Indian Trucker Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New York, Feb 25 (NationPress) President Donald Trump has urged Congress to enact a federal statute prohibiting the issuance of commercial driver's licenses to undocumented migrants in the United States, referencing an incident involving an illegal immigrant from India that resulted in a child's injury.
Trump stated, “I am imploring Congress to introduce legislation that we will refer to as ‘The Dalilah Law’, which would prevent states from issuing commercial driver's licenses to illegal aliens.” This was declared during his State of the Union Address to Congress on Wednesday (India time).
The child in question, Dalilah Coleman, was present in the public gallery and received a standing ovation after Trump called her name, with her father, Marcus Coleman, lifting her in celebration.
Trump highlighted Dalilah's situation while addressing the broader issue of illegal immigration, attributing blame to his predecessor, Joe Biden, and referencing several cases involving illegal immigrants.
While he did not disclose the driver's name or his nationality, Trump mentioned, “The driver was an illegal alien allowed into the country by Joe Biden and granted a commercial driver's license by politicians advocating for open borders in California.”
The driver of the truck linked to the incident, identified as Partap Singh, originally from India, allegedly entered the U.S. through Mexico in October 2022, according to the Homeland Security Department.
Following the accident, Trump recounted that “doctors indicated that Delilah would never walk, talk, or have a fulfilling life; they believed she would not be able to eat again.”
He praised her resilience, noting that she has recovered and is now in first grade, learning to walk.
“The majority of illegal aliens struggle with English and cannot comprehend basic road signs indicating direction, speed, danger, or location,” Trump remarked.
The incident occurred in California in June 2024 when Singh, driving an 18-wheeler truck, allegedly sped through a construction zone, leading to a multi-vehicle crash that injured multiple individuals, as stated by the Homeland Security Department.
According to the same department, Dalilah “was in a coma for three weeks and required six months of hospitalization before being able to return home.”
Additionally, the department revealed that at least three other undocumented migrants from India have been implicated in trucking accidents and are currently facing deportation.
