Washington, June 17 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, for suggesting that Trump had departed the Group of Seven (G7) Summit prematurely to address a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Trump made it clear that his early exit from the summit was unrelated to the ongoing conflict.
"Publicity-seeking President Emmanuel Macron of France inaccurately stated that I left the G7 Summit in Canada to return to D.C. for a 'ceasefire' discussion between Israel and Iran," Trump posted on Truth Social.
"Incorrect! He has no idea why I’m heading back to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a ceasefire. It’s much bigger than that. Whether intentionally or not, Emmanuel always misjudges the situation. Stay tuned!" he added.
While speaking to reporters at the G7 summit, Macron suggested that Trump was contemplating the possibilities of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel as he announced his early departure.
"There is indeed an offer to meet and engage. An offer was made, particularly to achieve a ceasefire and then initiate broader discussions. We must now see if the parties will comply," said Macron.
Calling it a favorable development, Macron further stated, "At this moment, I believe negotiations should resume, and that civilians must be safeguarded."
He also noted that he did not expect any immediate changes in the situation, but "since the US has promised they will secure a ceasefire and can apply pressure on Israel, things might shift."
Earlier, Trump announced that he would be cutting short his attendance at the G7 summit and heading home early.
"I need to return early for obvious reasons," Trump told reporters previously. He indicated he would leave after the formal dinner with the "wonderful leaders."
As the hostilities between Iran and Israel escalated, Trump has also urged citizens to evacuate Tehran.
The Israel-Iran conflict has now entered its fifth day, with tensions escalating as several missiles were launched from Iran towards Israel.
