Kampala, March 27 (NationPress) The Ugandan military has stepped up screening and surveillance along its border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) following the violent confrontations last week that resulted in the deaths of 242 Congolese militants.

Chris Magezi, the acting spokesperson for the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), informed Xinhua via phone on Thursday that the army, police, internal security agencies, and local councils are on high alert to thwart armed groups, including the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), from crossing into Uganda and initiating retaliatory strikes.

Recently, the Ugandan military reported the elimination of 242 armed Lendu fighters linked to the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO), who are allegedly allied with the ADF.

"The UPDF and all associated security agencies are collaborating closely. We remain constantly vigilant. We trust our systems to welcome those who seek safety and security, treat them humanely, and provide assistance while identifying any malicious elements," Magezi stated.

"We are diligently monitoring for any malicious elements trying to enter Uganda. They will be apprehended and brought to justice according to the law," he added.

Uganda dispatched troops several weeks ago to the northern Ituri Province in eastern DRC to mitigate attacks from Lendu militants under CODECO and other armed factions. This mission also aims to prevent ADF infiltration, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.

The ADF, a Ugandan rebel faction connected to the Islamic State in Central Africa, has been operational in eastern DRC for a prolonged period.

The UN Refugee Agency disclosed this week that over 30,000 Congolese individuals have sought refuge in Uganda since January.

Security agencies are cautioning that some militants may attempt to disguise themselves as refugees to enter Uganda.

On March 25, the Ugandan military reported that its troop deployment in eastern DRC, particularly in the town of Bunia, has played a crucial role in preventing civilian casualties.

Chris Magezi informed Xinhua via phone that the presence of Ugandan forces in Bunia, Djugu, and Mahagi has notably enhanced security in the northern province of Ituri in DRC.
