Kampala, May 5 (NationPress) Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has announced that coordinated military efforts conducted in neighboring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have successfully defeated insurgents in both nations.
In a message shared on his official X account late Saturday, Museveni stated that the Uganda Peoples' Defense Forces (UPDF) collaborated with the armies of both countries to overcome the insurgents.
"The army of our brothers in South Sudan, backed by the UPDF Expeditionary Force, has swiftly and completely defeated the insurgents that invaded their territory, capturing the town of Nassir and threatening other key locations," Museveni declared.
He further noted that in the DRC, the UPDF has successfully engaged the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) with the assistance of the Congolese army, also managing to control the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO), which has been attacking communities in the eastern region of Ituri.
In March, Uganda dispatched troops to South Sudan amid rising tensions between government forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those aligned with First Vice President Riek Machar.
In the DRC, joint military operations against the ADF commenced in November 2021, shortly after the rebel group executed bomb attacks in Kampala, Uganda's capital.
The ADF, a faction aligned with the Islamic State in Central Africa, is a Ugandan rebel group entrenched in the jungles of eastern DRC, notorious for wreaking havoc in local villages.
Earlier this year, Uganda sent troops to Ituri to mitigate assaults by armed Lendu militants associated with CODECO and other factions.
