United Nations, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, has issued a strong condemnation regarding the drone strikes that struck the UN peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, Sudan on Saturday.
The assaults resulted in six deaths and eight injuries, all of whom were part of the Bangladeshi peacekeeping force serving within the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, as stated by the UN chief.
Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the government and citizens of Bangladesh, as well as to the families of the deceased peacekeepers, while wishing for a swift recovery for the injured, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
He noted, "Attacks aimed at United Nations peacekeepers can amount to war crimes under international law, and I urge all conflict parties to fulfill their responsibility to safeguard UN personnel and civilians." He emphasized, "Accountability is necessary."
In his statement, the UN chief reiterated the urgent need for the conflicting parties to agree on an immediate halt to hostilities and to recommence discussions to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and a comprehensive, inclusive, and Sudanese-led political process.
The Sudanese Armed Forces have accused the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of executing the assault, a claim that the RSF has refuted.
In a statement from the SAF, it was revealed that the drone launched three missiles at the UN headquarters and the Bangladesh Battalion, igniting a UN storage facility. All casualties were members of the Bangladesh Battalion, part of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, an area of dispute between Sudan and South Sudan.
In a separate announcement, Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, which supports the SAF, condemned the incident, labeling it as an RSF drone assault on UN property in Kadugli. They termed it a grave infringement of international humanitarian law and the protections granted to UN installations.
"Targeting a protected UN facility signifies a perilous escalation and criminal actions equating to an organized terrorist act," the council stated, mentioning that the assault threatens humanitarian efforts and international missions.
