UN Chief Expresses Outrage Over Deaths of WFP Personnel in Sudan

United Nations, Dec 21 (NationPress) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply outraged following the tragic deaths of World Food Programme (WFP) employees resulting from an airstrike in Sudan. He has called for a comprehensive investigation, as reported by his spokesperson.

Three WFP staff members lost their lives when their office in Yabus, Blue Nile State, was struck by airstrikes on Thursday, confirmed the agency via social media, stating they are in the process of collecting additional information, according to Xinhua news agency.

In his statement, Guterres conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and their colleagues.

The UN chief condemned all assaults on UN and humanitarian personnel and facilities, reiterating the need for a thorough investigation.

He stated, “Yesterday's incident highlights the catastrophic impact that Sudan's violent conflict is inflicting on millions of individuals in need, as well as on the humanitarian workers striving to provide essential assistance.”

Guterres urged all parties involved to fulfill their responsibilities to safeguard civilians, including aid workers, as well as humanitarian locations and resources.

He once again emphasized the urgent necessity for a ceasefire in Sudan following over 20 months of ongoing conflict.

“The United Nations will persist in supporting international mediation initiatives and collaborate with all pertinent stakeholders to help conclude the war,” he stated.

“Any loss of life among humanitarian workers is absolutely unacceptable. Humanitarians should never be a target,” remarked WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain on Friday, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for the offenders.

The year 2024 has been marked as the deadliest on record for aid workers in Sudan, as per reports from the United Nations.
