Washington, August 1 (NationPress) The senior diplomats from South Korea and the United States engaged in discussions in Washington for the first time since the inauguration of President Lee Jae Myung last month, as both nations confront several cooperation challenges, including the upcoming summit between their leaders.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened at the State Department, a day after President Donald Trump revealed a trade agreement with Korea, announcing that his meeting with Lee is scheduled to occur at the White House in two weeks, on Thursday.
The two foreign ministers were expected to deliberate on strategies regarding North Korea's escalating nuclear threats and work towards a common understanding of the future of their bilateral alliance, in addition to addressing various regional and global matters, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
During a media briefing, Tommy Pigott, the principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, confirmed the meeting between the two top diplomats while commenting on the trade agreement between Seoul and Washington.
"This (trade) agreement, coinciding with the secretary's meeting today with ROK Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, underscores the enduring strength of the US-ROK alliance, which has been a cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the Indo-Pacific for over 70 years," he stated.
ROK is the official designation for South Korea, known as the Republic of Korea.
Analysts opined that Cho and Rubio might utilize part of their discussions to outline the agenda and timing for the summit between Lee and Trump.
South Korea's Industry Minister, Kim Jung-kwan, a member of Korea's trade negotiation team, informed reporters Wednesday that Trump expressed a desire to meet with Lee and instructed Rubio to arrange a summit at the earliest opportunity.
