California, Oct 16 (NationPress) A US federal judge has issued a temporary injunction preventing the Trump administration from terminating federal employees during the current government shutdown.
Judge Susan Yvonne Illston of the US District Court for the Northern District of California stated on Wednesday (local time) that the actions being taken are in violation of the law.
The restraining order was enacted shortly after the administration notified over 4,000 federal workers of impending layoffs. Two significant unions representing government employees filed a petition to halt these dismissals, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency.
Judge Illston noted that the administration had exploited the lapse in government funding and operations, expressing confidence that the unions could demonstrate the illegality of the government's actions.
The Trump administration had indicated a plan to reduce jobs during the shutdown, with President Donald Trump asserting that the cuts targeted "Democrat agencies" or initiatives.
Previously, White House budget director Russell Vought indicated expectations of job cuts affecting more than 10,000 federal positions due to the shutdown.
This order from Judge Illston came on the 15th day of the shutdown, just as the Senate failed for the ninth time to pass a temporary funding bill to reopen the government.
The advocacy group Democracy Forward, which represents the unions, expressed approval of the judge's decision.
CEO Skye Perryman remarked that the president appears to believe his government shutdown is diverting attention from the harmful and unlawful actions of his administration, but the American public is holding him accountable, including through legal avenues.
