Washington, Dec 13, (NationPress) The United States regards Sri Lanka as a vital ally in ensuring the security of the Indian Ocean and safeguarding global shipping routes, as stated by Eric Meyer, the nominee for the US Ambassador to Colombo, during a Senate hearing.

Meyer emphasized that Sri Lanka's strategic location is essential for the US in fostering maritime stability and countering increasing strategic rivalry in the region.

“Sri Lanka is positioned along some of the busiest shipping routes in the Indian Ocean, with US Navy ships and a significant portion of the world's oil supplies navigating its waters,” Meyer remarked while addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He noted that the nation's geographic advantages make it “a central point for US efforts aimed at promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific and countering adversarial influences, particularly China's expanding presence in the area.”

If confirmed, Meyer pledged to collaborate with governmental and industrial partners to further both security and commercial objectives.

“I plan to lead efforts with government and industry partners to enhance and protect US security and commercial interests in the Indian Ocean region,” he stated.

Meyer highlighted key priorities, which include port security, maritime domain awareness, and the protection of trade routes.

“Ensuring the safety of trade routes and ports, securing commercial prospects for US businesses, and supporting Sri Lanka’s maritime and economic sovereignty are essential components of my vision,” he added.

He pointed out that cooperation in defense and law enforcement would be pivotal.

“Our partnerships in defense and law enforcement are crucial to tackling security challenges,” Meyer noted, mentioning areas such as disaster relief, combating transnational crime, and enhancing port security.

Senate Committee Chairman Jim Risch again raised concerns over China's port investments in Sri Lanka, labeling them a global warning sign.

Meyer asserted that the US's approach would prioritize transparency.

“Bilateral relationships must be open and transparent,” he remarked.

Apart from security issues, Meyer connected Sri Lanka’s stability to economic reforms, underscoring the importance of “economic sovereignty and independence.”

Sri Lanka has emerged as a focal point in the geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean, as major powers vie for influence over vital maritime routes.

For India, developments in Sri Lanka’s maritime role are closely monitored due to the island nation’s proximity to significant shipping lanes and its influence on regional security and commerce.

Point of View
