Taipei, Feb 23 (NationPress) The United States Senators have accused China of undermining United Nations Resolution 2758 in a bid to isolate Taiwan. The senators have introduced a resolution in the Senate that reaffirms US support for Taiwan, opposing China's efforts to obstruct Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations.
Additionally, the resolution asserts that China has "weaponised" UN Resolution 2758 to misrepresent history and further isolate Taiwan.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted UN Resolution 2758 in 1971, transferring China's seat at the UN from Taiwan to China, but it did not address China's territorial claim to Taiwan or comment on Taiwan's political status, as reported by Taiwan's prominent daily, the Taipei Times.
On Friday, US Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen, the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Pete Ricketts and Chris Coons, presented a bi-partisan resolution aimed at countering the Chinese Communist Party's campaign to pressure the United States and other nations into recognizing its sovereignty claim over Taiwan.
"Let me make one thing very clear -- America does not recognize China's claim over Taiwan. Once again, the Chinese government has attempted to trick the world and subvert the United Nations for its own purposes, but we see these malign tactics and stand in support of our friends in Taiwan," declared Senator Risch.
"Beijing's efforts to prevent Taiwan's meaningful participation in the United Nations further undermine international support for Taiwan, and this bipartisan resolution clearly states that the United States will not permit that," noted Ranking Member Shaheen.
"The Communist Party of China's pressure campaign for its 'One China principle' aims to gain international support to isolate, coerce, and potentially invade Taiwan. We must categorically reject Beijing's strong-arming and revisionist history while bolstering Taiwan's meaningful participation on the global stage," stated Senator Pete Ricketts.
The proposed resolution challenges the misleading narrative pushed by the Chinese government that UNGA Resolution 2758 constitutes an international agreement granting China sovereignty over Taiwan. It reaffirms that the US 'one China policy' is not synonymous with the Chinese Communist Party's 'one China principle.'
Furthermore, it opposes China's attempts to block Taiwan's meaningful engagement in international organizations, as outlined in a press release from the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Taiwan's Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim expressed her gratitude for the resolution.
On X, the Vice President remarked, "Thank you, Chairman Risch, for once again calling China out on their malign tactics in the international system, and for reiterating your support for Taiwan."
