US Social Security benefits rise 3.6% in 2027, adding $75/month for retirees
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The United States has announced a 3.6 per cent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to Social Security benefits for 2027, delivering an average of $75 more per month to retired workers as millions of Americans contend with persistent rises in living costs. The adjustment, confirmed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on Wednesday, 15 October 2026, will benefit approximately 76 million Americans across two programmes starting as early as 31 December 2026.
Who Gets What and When
Nearly 72 million beneficiaries will see higher payments beginning January 2027, while approximately 7.3 million recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive their increases reflected in payments starting 31 December 2026. Some individuals qualify under both programmes, accounting for the combined 76 million figure.
The estimated average monthly retirement benefit will climb from $2,095 to $2,170. For retired couples where both spouses receive benefits, the combined average monthly payment is expected to rise from $3,238 to $3,355. Workers receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will see their average monthly benefit increase from $1,642 to $1,701.
On the SSI side, the maximum monthly payment for an eligible individual rises from $994 to $1,029, while an eligible couple will see their combined maximum go from $1,491 to $1,544.
What Officials Said
Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the adjustment would deliver greater financial stability to tens of millions of Americans. 'Social Security will implement this cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, giving them greater financial stability,' he said in a statement. He added: 'Under President Donald J. Trump, Social Security is delivering better, faster, higher-quality service for the American people.'
How the Adjustment Is Calculated
The annual COLA is determined using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), compiled by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase is automatic under federal law and does not require separate congressional approval. The 3.6 per cent adjustment is notably higher than the 2.8 per cent increase implemented for 2026, reflecting stronger upward pressure on consumer prices over the relevant measurement period.
Earnings Thresholds Also Revised
The SSA also announced changes to several earnings-related thresholds. The maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security payroll taxes will rise from $184,500 to $192,300 in 2027. For beneficiaries below full retirement age who continue working, the annual earnings limit before benefit withholding begins will increase from $24,480 to $25,560.
How Indian-American Beneficiaries Are Affected
The adjustment is also relevant to eligible Indian-American retirees and other beneficiaries of Indian origin who receive US Social Security payments. Eligibility and payment amounts depend on individual contribution records and programme rules rather than nationality alone. Beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare will additionally receive information about changes to their premiums — which can affect net monthly deposits — through the official Medicare website once those figures are released.
Beneficiaries with personal online SSA accounts will be able to view updated benefit notices from late November 2026 onwards, with paper notices mailed in December to those not enrolled in paperless notifications.
