Seoul, July 11 (NationPress) The United States has stipulated that South Korea's involvement in its strategy to contain China is essential for bilateral collaboration in the shipbuilding industry, a crucial topic in the current trade discussions between the two nations, as noted by a Seoul official on Friday.
"The shipbuilding sector stands out as a significant area where the US is eager for partnership with South Korea in its efforts to counteract China," stated Chang Sung-gil, the director general for trade policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, during a parliamentary forum discussing Seoul's approach to tariff negotiations with the Trump administration.
He elaborated, "Washington perceives China's shipbuilding capabilities as an escalating threat and sees South Korea as a strategic ally in supporting the American shipbuilding sector." He further emphasized, "South Korea's involvement in the US's containment strategy regarding China is a prerequisite for this shipbuilding collaboration."
Chang's comments come amid ongoing discussions between Seoul and the Trump administration about tariffs, non-tariff measures, and industrial cooperation, with the aim of achieving complete exemptions or reductions in US tariffs on imports including cars and steel.
This week, Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo traveled to Washington for discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and other government and congressional officials.
Upon returning on Thursday, Yeo informed reporters that he had proposed enhanced bilateral cooperation in manufacturing, especially within the shipbuilding and semiconductor industries, as a potential solution to minimize South Korea's trade surplus with the US, according to Yonhap news agency.
Yeo's visit occurred as the Seoul government is in the final stages of trade negotiations, just weeks before the Trump administration plans to impose a 25% reciprocal tariff on Korean goods starting August 1.
Chang mentioned that the South Korean government is devising a strategy for the type of shipbuilding partnership it aims to establish with the US, along with how South Korean firms can receive favorable treatment under US legislation intended to stimulate the American shipbuilding industry.
