Washington, Oct 19 (NationPress) - The US Department of State has reported credible intelligence indicating that Hamas is preparing for a potential attack targeting Palestinian civilians.
In a statement released on Saturday, the United States informed the guarantor nations of the Gaza peace agreement regarding these alarming reports.
A strike against civilians would severely jeopardize recent mediation efforts and the strides made towards establishing peace. The department warned that "should Hamas carry out this attack, steps will be taken to safeguard the people of Gaza and maintain the integrity of the ceasefire," it added.
The ceasefire, which commenced on October 10, outlines the initial phase of prisoner exchanges, humanitarian aid access to Gaza, and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
On early Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they had received the body of the 10th Israeli hostage deceased in Gaza, in addition to the remaining 20 living hostages. By Saturday evening, the IDF confirmed the retrieval of two more deceased Israeli hostages' bodies.
Hamas has not yet responded to the US announcement.
Previously, Hamas criticized Israel's ongoing closure of the Rafah border crossing connecting Egypt and the Gaza Strip, stating that it will "hinder recovery operations and the transfer of the bodies of Israeli hostages."
According to Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to keep the crossing closed indefinitely "represents a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement and a rejection of the commitments made to mediators and guarantor entities," as stated in their press release.
The ceasefire, facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States, took effect on October 10 and encompasses the exchange of prisoners and detainees, humanitarian assistance entry into Gaza, and a partial Israeli forces withdrawal.
