Tripoli, March 23 (NationPress) Violent confrontations erupted in Zawiya, located approximately 60 km to the west of Tripoli, resulting in a fatality, according to reports from a local newspaper.

Al-Bashti Al-Zahouf, a representative of Zawiya's Council of Elders and Notables, informed Al-Mashhad newspaper that the clashes ignited in the Dila-Qamouda region between two armed groups on Sunday (Local time). Both factions are associated with the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU).

This outbreak of violence highlights ongoing friction in Zawiya, where competing armed factions have clashed repeatedly, despite appeals from local authorities for peace.

Since the overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been divided between two rival governments—the Tripoli-based GNU and the eastern administration sanctioned by the House of Representatives. Internal conflicts often arise, leading to casualties.

Libya remains fragmented between the UN-recognized GNU in the west and a competing eastern administration led by Osama Hammad, which is supported by Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.

Earlier this month, local media reported that two members of armed groups were killed in Zawiya when gunfire targeted a bulletproof vehicle.

A source from Al-Masar TV revealed that gunmen opened fire on an armored vehicle in Zawiya, resulting in the immediate death of one armed group member, while another succumbed to injuries later.

As reported by Al-Masar TV and citing a local source, the ongoing clashes are between forces loyal to Mahmoud Bin Rajab, commander of the Support Force of the Tripoli Security Directorate appointed by the Presidential Council, and the First Support Unit led by local militia leader Mohamed Bahroun.
