Sydney, Jan 17 (NationPress) A woman tragically lost her life when her vehicle was hit by a falling tree to the south of Sydney as severe winds and intense rainfall battered Australia's east coast on Saturday.

Emergency services responded to reports of a tree branch that had fallen onto a car approximately 90 km south of central Sydney just before 4 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while a male passenger sustained minor injuries. Fortunately, two passengers in the backseat were unharmed, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The east coast state of New South Wales experienced violent thunderstorms on Saturday, resulting in flash flooding in northern Sydney and delays at Sydney Airport.

The State Emergency Service indicated it had received numerous calls for help across the state and rescued four individuals from floodwaters.

Superintendent Matt Kirby of the emergency service stated that the harsh weather conditions would persist until Sunday, with heavy rain anticipated in Sydney and surrounding areas to the north and south.

"We urge individuals not to drive through floodwaters and to be cautious about where they park, as trees can fall unpredictably," he cautioned.

Beaches around Sydney were closed due to dangerous swells, and law enforcement advised the public to steer clear of areas vulnerable to large waves.

In another development, an emergency flash flooding warning was issued on Thursday for coastal towns in the Australian state of Victoria.

Residents and visitors in towns along the famous Great Ocean Road, about 120 km southwest of Melbourne, were informed to take immediate shelter after a storm cell unleashed heavy rain.

Thousands of homes in the area were left without power, and videos on social media depicted vehicles being swept away by floodwaters.

Erin Mason from the State Emergency Service informed ABC radio that while there were no injury reports, efforts were underway to evacuate those stranded in flooded holiday parks.

"We have crews on-site now assisting individuals to higher ground and safer locations," she stated.

ABC reported that a rain gauge near the town of Lorne, a favored tourist destination, recorded 170 millimeters (mm) of rainfall in just seven hours since 9 a.m. local time on Thursday, surpassing the previous daily record of 123 mm set in December 2021.

Earlier on Thursday, Victoria's Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch noted that the number of properties confirmed destroyed by ongoing bushfires had risen to 900, including around 260 homes.
