Nairobi, Feb 16 (NationPress) Kenyan aviation officials confirmed on Monday that they have implemented contingency measures to restore standard operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following disruptions caused by a workers' strike.

The ongoing labour dispute between the Kenya Aviation Workers Union and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), which commenced early Monday, has resulted in significant delays affecting numerous flights, leaving many passengers stranded. This disruption is impacting airlines, travelers, and businesses at one of Africa's busiest airports, which caters to millions of passengers and substantial cargo traffic each year.

The Kenya Airports Authority stated, "Contingency plans are now in effect. Passengers should reach out to their respective airlines for the latest schedule updates," reaffirming its commitment to safety and operational excellence across all airports, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The core of the labour dispute revolves around unresolved worker grievances, particularly the lack of progress on a collective bargaining agreement that has been pending since 2015. Workers contend that agreements dating back a decade have not been acted upon, leaving them without promised salary adjustments.

Although the workers' union issued a seven-day strike notice, the aviation regulatory body subsequently sought a court intervention in an attempt to prevent the strike.

KCAA has advised passengers to arrive early and remain adaptable, as flight schedules may be altered to address the ongoing operational issues.

The national carrier, Kenya Airways, has encouraged passengers to frequently check their flight status following the activation of contingency protocols by KCAA. The airline recommended travellers utilize its website, mobile app, and official communication channels for real-time flight updates.

"The airline is collaborating closely with KCAA and other relevant authorities to manage delays and ensure the safety of passengers during this challenging period," the airline stated.

According to Kenya Airways, delays in air traffic control are impacting some departures and arrivals at the main airport.

KCAA Director General Emile Arao mentioned that recovery efforts are in progress, and flight schedules are being reinstated systematically and with priority.

"We are clearing passenger backlogs in an organized and prioritized manner. Operations are steadily stabilizing, with normal schedules expected to resume shortly," Arao affirmed in a statement.

He urged passengers to verify their flight details with their airlines prior to arriving at the airport, emphasizing that safety is the highest priority as efforts continue to alleviate passenger backlogs.
