Bhupender Yadav visits Fiji temple, holds key Pre-COP31 talks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav visited the Shri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple in Nadi, Fiji on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, underlining the enduring cultural and civilisational bonds between India and Fiji. The visit came on the sidelines of the Pre-COP31 preparatory meetings being co-hosted by Australia, Fiji, and Tuvalu under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Temple Visit and Cultural Ties
'The temple stands as a vibrant testament to the enduring cultural, spiritual and civilisational bonds between India and Fiji,' Yadav wrote in a post on X. The Shri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple in Nadi is widely regarded as one of the largest Hindu temples in the Southern Hemisphere and is a prominent symbol of the Indian diaspora's legacy in Fiji, descendants of indentured labourers who arrived on the island more than a century ago.
Key Bilateral and Multilateral Meetings
Yadav held a series of high-level engagements on the sidelines of the Pre-COP deliberations. He met Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary in Germany's Federal Environment Ministry, co-facilitating a discussion in the Mitigation Breakout Session to enable an open platform for dialogue on critical agenda items in support of the COP presidency.
The Union Minister also met Amina J Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General, and Simon Stiell, UNFCCC Executive Secretary. According to Yadav, discussions covered key priorities ahead of COP31, with emphasis on means of implementation, just transition, adaptation, and climate finance. 'India remains committed to engaging with the upcoming COP Presidency and UNFCCC constructively, extending all required support,' he stated.
India-EU Climate Cooperation
Yadav also met Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, with talks centred on clean energy access and the role of science-based, inclusive policy-making. Both sides discussed the importance of native wisdom combined with technology transfer in delivering tangible climate solutions. 'India and the EU will work together closely to have a productive, solution-oriented COP31 in November,' Yadav posted on X. Responding on X, Hoekstra wrote: 'As always, good to meet Minister Bhupender Yadav at pre-COP. We discussed our expectations for COP31, specifically on clean electrification and on the role of science.'
What Is Pre-COP and What Comes Next
Pre-COP is a preparatory diplomatic meeting held weeks before the annual UN Climate Change Conference. COP31 is scheduled to be held in Turkey in November 2026, and the Fiji sessions are intended to narrow differences on contentious agenda items before the main conference convenes. India's active role in co-facilitating the Mitigation Breakout Session signals its intent to shape the negotiating text ahead of Turkey. With climate finance and just transition remaining flashpoints between developed and developing nations, the outcomes of these pre-negotiations will be closely watched.
