Dhaka, Dec 18 (NationPress) A prominent global human rights organization has denounced the recent detention of a senior journalist in Bangladesh under the country's Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). The organization asserts that employing terror legislation to curtail freedom of expression and association is in violation of international law.
This condemnation arose following the reported arrest of senior Bangladeshi journalist Anis Alamgir, who was taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) without any formal charges and placed under a five-day remand on December 15, as part of a case filed under the ATA.
According to media sources, the human rights group Amnesty International indicated that Alamgir's arrest stemmed from a complaint claiming that he and four others utilized their social media platforms to support the Awami League.
In response to this incident, Rehab Mahamoor, a representative of Amnesty International, emphasized that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus should promote freedom of expression ahead of the February 2026 elections, rather than exploit anti-terror laws to silence dissenting voices.
