Is Zelensky Optimistic About Proposed Ukraine-US-Russia Talks?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kyiv, Dec 21 (NationPress) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a general endorsement of the concept of a trilateral dialogue that would involve the national security advisors from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, showing a sense of cautious hope regarding the potential outcomes of such a gathering.
The proposition was initiated by the United States and communicated to Zelensky by Ukraine's lead peace negotiator, Rustem Umerov, as reported by the Xinhua news agency, citing Interfax-Ukraine.
Zelensky commented that while he was uncertain about what new developments could arise from the meeting, he acknowledged that the previous discussions in Türkiye resulted in the repatriation of imprisoned soldiers and civilians.
"I am very pleased that we facilitated exchanges. Our citizens, particularly our military personnel, as well as civilians, have returned home. Hence, we must pursue such initiatives," he stated.
Zelensky further remarked, "If the outcomes include exchanges or any other agreements, I cannot oppose it, so we support the United States proposal. We will see how it unfolds."
However, he emphasized that numerous challenging issues in the ongoing peace negotiations remain unresolved, including territorial disputes, oversight of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power facility, and financing for Ukraine's reconstruction.
According to reports, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are slated to represent the United States, while the Russian delegation is expected to include Vladimir Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Additionally, Umerov is anticipated to hold a separate meeting with the US delegation, possibly in Miami or another location in the United States.
Officials from the US, Europe, and Ukraine have reportedly achieved a consensus or significantly narrowed their differences on 90% of a 20-point US draft peace framework during discussions in Berlin last weekend.
