Kyiv, July 15 (NationPress) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has conveyed his heartfelt thanks to US President Donald Trump for his readiness to assist Ukraine and play a role in efforts to conclude the conflict with Russia. After what Zelensky characterized as a “very productive conversation,” he embraced Trump’s commitment to achieving a “lasting and equitable peace” amid the ongoing hostilities.
“I had a discussion with President Donald Trump. It was a very productive conversation. Thank you for your readiness to support Ukraine and for continuing our collaboration to halt the violence and establish a lasting and equitable peace. President Trump shared insights about his recent meeting with the NATO Secretary General. Maintaining a strong relationship is crucial, and it is vital that member nations are enhancing their defense expenditures,” Zelensky mentioned in a post on X.
“We explored the essential measures and strategies with the President to enhance protection for our citizens against Russian assaults and to fortify our positions. We are eager to work as effectively as possible to attain peace. We agreed to communicate more frequently via phone and coordinate our actions moving forward. Thank you, Mr. President! Thank you, America!” the post concluded.
These comments followed President Trump’s warning on Monday of imposing a secondary 100% tariff on nations importing oil, gas, and uranium from Russia, expressing his “deep dissatisfaction” with Moscow’s obstinacy in resolving the war with Ukraine.
Trump set a 50-day deadline for the punitive tariffs to be implemented if Russia failed to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine while addressing reporters alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House. “We are extremely dissatisfied with them, and we will be imposing very stringent tariffs. If there’s no deal in 50 days, tariffs of approximately 100% will be enacted, referred to as secondary tariffs,” he stated.
The Ukrainian leader also spoke with the NATO Secretary General, who updated him on the meeting with President Trump in Washington and collaborative efforts between Europe and the US to enhance support for Ukraine.
“I had another very productive discussion with Mark Rutte. He provided insights about today’s meeting in Washington with President Trump and the details of cooperation between Europe and the US to continue and amplify support for Ukraine. We are grateful for the commitment to provide additional Patriot missile systems, and the US, Germany, and Norway are already collaborating on this initiative. Additional arms will also be delivered to safeguard our population and defend against Russian offensives. It is essential to increase pressure on Russia to secure peace and save lives. Thank you, Mark!” Zelensky added in another post on X.
