New Delhi, July 28 (NationPress) A remarkable 10.33 crore LPG gas connections have been allocated under the Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojna (PMUY) nationwide (as of July 1), as reported in Parliament on Monday.
The PMUY, initiated in May 2016, aims to offer deposit-free LPG connections to 8 crore women from economically disadvantaged households throughout India—this goal was successfully met by September 2019, stated Suresh Gopi, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, in a written response to a question in Rajya Sabha.
To broaden its reach, Ujjwala 2.0 was introduced in August 2021, targeting an additional 1 crore connections, which was accomplished by January 2022, the minister noted.
Subsequently, an extra 60 lakh connections were added, reaching completion by December 2022, with 75 lakh more connections sanctioned and finalized by July 2024, he elaborated.
To foster awareness about the scheme and to resolve any concerns regarding LPG usage, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) frequently organize LPG Panchayats for their customers.
The government has implemented numerous measures to promote effective LPG consumption among PMUY beneficiaries, including the suspension of loan recovery from subsidy amounts, a swap option from 14.2 kg to 5 kg to lessen initial costs, and the introduction of a 5 kg double bottle connection, in addition to conducting Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayats aimed at encouraging the sustained use of LPG through mass awareness campaigns, the minister informed.
To enhance the affordability of LPG for PMUY consumers and ensure consistent usage, the government introduced a targeted subsidy of Rs 200 for each 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year in May 2022.
In October 2023, the government increased this targeted subsidy to Rs 300 for each 14.2 kg cylinder. Following this enhancement, the Government of India is providing 14.2 kg LPG cylinders at an effective rate of Rs 553 per cylinder in Delhi, according to the response.
The LPG consumption patterns of PMUY beneficiaries are regularly monitored through PPAC’s Consumption reports, the Common LPG Data Platform (CLDP), and meetings with oil marketing companies (OMCs).
Numerous independent studies and reports have indicated that the PMUY scheme has profoundly benefited the lives of rural households, particularly women and families residing in remote and rural areas, the minister highlighted.
