New Delhi, Sep 22 (NationPress) The Central Government is set to distribute 2.5 million free LPG connections as part of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) during the auspicious festival of Navratri, as announced by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Monday.
This initiative will elevate the total number of Ujjwala beneficiaries to 106 million families throughout the nation.
The Minister emphasized that the government will invest Rs 2,050 for each connection, which will include a complimentary LPG cylinder, gas stove, regulator, and other essential equipment.
Describing this as a Navratri gift for women, Puri noted that the expansion of Ujjwala underscores Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to empowering women.
“With the auspicious commencement of Navratri, the provision of 2.5 million new free PM Ujjwala connections serves as further evidence that PM Narendra Modi reveres women akin to Goddess Durga. This decision reinforces our commitment to honoring and empowering mothers and sisters,” he posted on X.
The Minister commended the scheme as a beacon of empowerment and a catalyst for transformation.
He remarked that Ujjwala has not only rendered kitchens smoke-free but has also enhanced the health and well-being of countless women and their families.
“This is not merely a scheme; it has ignited a substantial revolution, with its flame reaching every nook and cranny of the nation, including remote areas,” he added.
Puri also mentioned the recent Union Cabinet's decision to grant a subsidy of Rs 300 on refills for over 10.33 crore Ujjwala families.
With this subsidy, the cost of cylinders will be Rs 553, which is notably lower than prices in numerous LPG-producing nations.
Expressing appreciation for Prime Minister Modi, he stated that the scheme has visibly transformed women's lives.
“Gone are the days of stinging eyes, smoke-filled air, and blisters on hands. Instead, we now witness smiles of joy, good health, and the essence of love,” he conveyed.
Initially launched in May 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to women from economically disadvantaged households. Under Ujjwala 2.0, beneficiaries will also receive the first refill and stove at no cost.
