New Delhi, May 5 (NationPress) As the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) marks its nine-year milestone, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri shared compelling statistics that illustrate the transformative impact of this initiative, especially among disadvantaged communities.
On Monday, the minister took to his social media platform X and stated, "9 Years of Ujjwala Yojana, over 10.33 crore families thriving!"
He added, "The refilling of over 238 crore cylinders in the last nine years highlights the success of this scheme."
The PMUY completed its significant nine-year journey on May 1 of this year, representing a crucial step towards the nation's goal of providing cooking fuel to all. The scheme offers deposit-free LPG cylinders to the adult women members of impoverished households throughout the country.
The minister further elaborated on the scheme's success, stating that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the PM Ujjwala Yojana has emerged as a prominent example of women’s empowerment and a significant benefit for the health of homemakers.
“In the last decade, the addition of 11,670 new LPG distributors has facilitated cylinder delivery in even the most remote and challenging locations,” he emphasized.
It is noteworthy that the PMUY has significantly improved the lives of millions of underprivileged individuals across the nation.
As of March 2025, 10.33 crore households have benefited from the PMUY initiative. To extend coverage to additional impoverished households, the government introduced Ujjwala 2.0 in August 2021, aiming to provide 1 crore more PMUY connections. This target was met by January 2022, resulting in the release of 60 lakh LPG connections under Ujjwala 2.0, achieving a cumulative total of 1.60 crore connections by December 2022.
As of March 1, 2025, the total number of domestic LPG consumers in the country reached 32.94 crore, which includes 10.33 crore PMUY beneficiaries.
