1.18 Crore Dwellings Approved Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban

New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved a total of 1.18 crore houses. Among these, 1.14 crore have been grounded, and 88.32 lakh have been completed and delivered to beneficiaries, including the homeless population throughout the country, as reported to Parliament on Thursday.

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, shared this information in response to a query in the Lok Sabha, noting that according to the Census of India 2011, there are approximately 9.38 lakh homeless individuals in urban regions of the nation.

In response to another inquiry, Manohar Lal, the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, stated that a High-Level Committee composed of esteemed urban planners, economists, and institutions was established by MoHUA on May 31, 2022, to provide recommendations regarding urban sector policies, capacity building, and governance.

The Committee's term is set to conclude on July 3, 2024. Its objectives included analyzing urban planning scenarios in various states and cities, identifying gaps, and proposing short, medium, and long-term solutions.

The Minister emphasized that the Committee's findings also presented innovative ideas and technological interventions for urban planning aimed at transforming cities into 'engines of economic growth and innovation', while ensuring sustainability based on the ecosystem's carrying capacity.

To improve urban planning and the development of city Master Plans, the minister highlighted that MoHUA has issued the Urban and Regional Development Plan Formulation and Implementation (URDPFI) Guidelines, 2014, which address various challenges in urban governance and sustainability, particularly in areas like Delhi.

Furthermore, the minister noted that MoHUA is executing the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), which includes a Sub-Scheme focused on creating GIS-based Master Plans for AMRUT cities. This Sub-Scheme is aimed at establishing a geo-database as well as formulating these plans.

Currently, 461 AMRUT Cities from 35 States are part of this initiative. To date, 219 towns have finalized their Master Plans, and 158 towns are in the draft phase. Under AMRUT 2.0, the GIS-based Master Plan formulation has been expanded to include Class-II towns with populations between 50,000 and 99,999. So far, 661 Class-II towns have submitted proposals under this scheme.
