Kolkata, Nov 12 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has concluded its initial timeline for distributing enumeration forms as part of the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) in West Bengal. Alarmingly, approximately 15 percent of the state's voters still have not received their forms.

Data from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal reveals that just over 6.56 crore voters have obtained enumeration forms as of 8 p.m. on Tuesday, representing about 85.71 percent of the total registered voters.

As of October 27, the total number of electors in West Bengal stands at 7,66,37,529.

In light of this situation, those voters who are yet to receive their enumeration forms are eagerly awaiting any updates regarding a potential extension of the deadline from the CEO's office.

Meanwhile, the CEO's office is reportedly liaising with the ECI headquarters in New Delhi for further instructions on this matter, as confirmed by sources within the electoral body.

Among various districts, the distribution progress is notably sluggish in Kolkata, with only about 66 percent of voters having received their forms.

Conversely, districts like East Burdwan and East Midnapore have reported the highest rates of enumeration form distribution, achieving 97 percent.

Additionally, the BLO Oikya Mancha (BLO Unity Forum), a collective of booth-level officers in West Bengal, has voiced concerns over the short timeframe allocated for the distribution of enumeration forms, which they believe has not been adequately addressed by the commission.

“Although the official enumeration form distribution began on November 4, the initial days saw significant delays due to a lack of sufficient forms. The momentum only picked up starting November 6,” stated a representative from the forum.

Point of View

The situation in West Bengal raises significant questions about the efficacy of the enumeration process. It is crucial for the Election Commission to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the electoral process. The reported delays and low distribution rates in certain districts must be addressed promptly to maintain public trust in the electoral system.
