Hyderabad, April 11 (NationPress) In a significant setback for the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), a total of 22 Maoists surrendered to the police in Telangana’s Mulugu district on Friday.
The militants laid down their weapons before Mulugu district Superintendent of Police Dr P. Shabarish at the district police headquarters.
Among those who gave themselves up are four Area Committee Members (ACMs) and one party member, while the rest were militia members.
The SP announced that the ACMs would each receive Rs 4 lakh for their rehabilitation. The party member will be awarded Rs 1 lakh, and others will obtain Rs 25,000 each.
The SP urged prominent Maoist leaders to surrender and integrate into the national mainstream, asserting that the ideology of left-wing extremism has become obsolete. He emphasized that they cannot achieve anything productive by remaining in the jungles.
On Thursday, the SP had issued a warning that strict measures would be enforced against Maoists who threaten tribal communities and attempt to limit their movements in the forests near Karrigutta by claiming that bombs had been planted.
Shabarish stated that tribes have historically relied on the forest for their livelihood, where grazing cattle and collecting forest products are common activities. He reassured that people should not be intimidated by such threats, noting that Mulugu police are implementing extensive security measures for their protection and will respond decisively.
The surrender of these 22 Maoists in Mulugu occurred less than a week after 86 Maoists had surrendered to the police in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.
Of those who surrendered, 82 were from Bhadradri-Kothagudem district and four were from Mulugu district. Police reported that they were all active in the Bijapur forests of the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh.
In March, 64 Maoists surrendered to the police in Bhadradri-Kothagudem. This year, nearly 250 extremists have surrendered across the state.
