New Delhi, March 26 (NationPress) In a prompt response to the suggestions put forth by the Supreme Court Collegium, the Centre has officially sanctioned the appointment of three judges as permanent members of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. “Utilizing the authority granted by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is delighted to appoint (i) Shri Justice Sumeet Goel, (ii) Smt. Justice Sudeepti Sharma, and (iii) Ms. Justice Kirti Singh, Additional Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court, to the position of Judges of that High Court effective from the date they take on their respective roles,” stated a notification released by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.
Recently, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna-headed SC Collegium endorsed the proposal to appoint Justices Sumeet Goel, Sudeepti Sharma, and Kirti Singh as permanent judges within the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
“The Supreme Court Collegium, during its meeting on 19th March 2025, has sanctioned the proposal for the appointment of the following Additional Judges as Permanent Judges in the High Court of Punjab Haryana: (i) Shri Justice Sumeet Goel, (ii) Smt. Justice Sudeepti Sharma, and (iii) Ms. Justice Kirti Singh,” read a statement posted on the official website of the apex court.
The appointment of Chief Justices and Judges of the High Courts is carried out by the President under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution. Additionally, the President can appoint Additional Judges under clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) governing the selection of High Court judges, the Chief Justice of the High Court should refrain from recommending the appointment of an Additional Judge when a position for a permanent Judge is vacant.
