Srinagar, Jan 16 (NationPress) In a notable enforcement operation, 30 fuel outlets were identified selling petrol and diesel in breach of the Legal Metrology Act 2009 on Thursday.
An official announcement indicated that this measure aimed to safeguard consumer interests by ensuring adherence to the stipulations of the Legal Metrology Act and Petroleum Rules.
Specialized teams from the Legal Metrology Department conducted simultaneous inspections across seven districts within the Kashmir division, targeting these unlawfully operating outlets.
"These dedicated inspection teams were formed through a special directive from the Controller of Legal Metrology, and thorough inspection operations were executed by the respective teams today, revealing that these illegal fuel outlets were breaching vital legal standards and regulatory requirements, including the utilization of unverified nozzles and manipulation of measuring devices," the announcement stated.
"It was noted that these fuel dispensing units were functioning without any authorization from either the Oil Marketing Companies or the Petroleum and Safety Organisation, and the nozzles employed for delivering fuel to customers were found lacking verification from the Legal Metrology Department," the announcement stated.
The statement further elaborated that the quantity of petrol or diesel paid for by consumers could not be warranted in the absence of certification and inspections from the relevant agencies.
"Considering these circumstances, all such dispensing units were sealed today in Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, Pulwama, Shopian, Srinagar, and Anantnag. Cases have been initiated against the owners/operators of these sealed petrol stations, and legal actions under the pertinent sections of the Legal Metrology Act and Petroleum Rules are currently in progress," the statement continued.
The order issued by the Controller of Legal Metrology J&K highlighted reports of various outlets in the Kashmir valley operating in contravention of Section 24, Section 12, Section 30, and Section 26 of the Legal Metrology Act 2009, which not only undermines consumer interests but also presents a serious risk to public safety by operating without the safety standards mandated by the Petroleum and Safety Organisation.
The order further noted that these outlets are violating the conditions outlined in Rule 141 of the Petroleum Rules and the associated Form XIII and Article 4 therein, with such non-compliance compromising transparency and consumer interests.
The infringement of the Petroleum Rules additionally threatens the safe handling and storage of flammable materials like petrol and diesel.
Meanwhile, the department has encouraged consumers to remain vigilant and report any short deliveries at fuel stations to the department. The cooperation of consumers is crucial in combating illegal operations and ensuring fair and safe fuel distribution.
