Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday, 6 July jointly reviewed Indian Railways' operational readiness for the upcoming Ratha Yatra in the holy coastal town of Puri, with the festival set to draw lakhs of devotees from across the country. The review focused on crowd management, passenger movement, and infrastructure preparedness ahead of one of India's largest religious gatherings.

Key Operational Arrangements

Officials briefed the ministers on an integrated plan that includes the operation of more than 300 special trains to handle the anticipated surge in pilgrim traffic. Holding areas capable of accommodating over 30,000 devotees have been earmarked in Puri to ease congestion at key transit points.

Additional passenger amenities are also being put in place, including dedicated food arrangements and extra ticket counters at the station. Minister Vaishnaw personally inspected passenger facilities at Puri Railway Station, reviewing safety measures and the overall operational plan for the festival period.

State Government's High-Level Review

Separately, Chief Minister Majhi chaired a high-level special review meeting for the Ratha Yatra, which is scheduled to commence on 16 July. He stressed the importance of seamless coordination among all officials and staff involved in the festival's management.

Majhi urged every official to treat their duties as a sacred responsibility carried out under the command of Lord Jagannath, underscoring the spiritual significance of the event alongside its logistical demands. He also confirmed that extensive police deployment has been sanctioned for security and crowd management throughout the festival.

Why This Level of Preparation Matters

The Puri Ratha Yatra is among the most attended religious events in India, drawing millions of pilgrims annually. The convergence of devotees from across the country places extraordinary pressure on the town's transport infrastructure — particularly the railway network, which remains the primary mode of travel for most pilgrims.
