Chennai, Oct 1 (NationPress) More than 3,500 police officers are set to be deployed to safeguard the safety of lakhs of devotees anticipated to gather at the renowned Mutharaman temple in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu, for the Soorasamharam festival on October 2, which coincides with the Dussehra celebration.
During a briefing on Monday, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police (SP) Albert John detailed the extensive measures being implemented, emphasizing enhanced surveillance and crowd control protocols informed by recent large-crowd incidents, such as the tragic stampede in Karur.
To accommodate the expected surge in vehicles, parking facilities have been expanded by an additional 50 acres, complementing the existing 200 acres. Furthermore, three temporary bus stations have been set up to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure smooth transit for pilgrims.
For the first time, district police will utilize Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and vehicle counting systems at critical entry points, including Seithunganallur, Udangudi, and Authoor.
“These technologies will allow us to count vehicles, log registration numbers, and optimize parking arrangements,” stated SP John, noting that the initiative, while temporary, will significantly enhance crowd management.
This year, CCTV coverage throughout the festival area will be doubled compared to previous years. Moreover, a dedicated control room has been established to monitor crowd dynamics and traffic in real time.
Two drones will be deployed for aerial monitoring to pinpoint congestion areas, heavy foot traffic, and traffic obstructions, facilitating prompt action from ground teams. Additionally, a new AI-driven chatbot will assist devotees by providing real-time updates on drinking water availability, parking status, restroom locations, and traffic alerts.
Special committees have also been formed to supervise the “adal padal” cultural performances, adhering to court orders to prevent inappropriate content.
SP John assured that this year’s focus is on safety and convenience. “Our commitment is to manage the significant crowd responsibly while preventing overcrowding, informed by lessons learned from recent incidents,” he affirmed.
With the integration of advanced technology and thorough planning, the Thoothukudi police are optimistic about ensuring that this year’s Soorasamharam is safe, well-organized, and smooth for the many devotees participating in the grand Dussehra festivities.
