Mumbai, Jan 31 (NationPress) In a significant enforcement action, the Maharashtra Legislature Secretariat has sent show cause notices to around 400 employees across categories A, B, C, and D for not attending the Republic Day flag-hoisting event at Vidhan Bhavan. The notices indicate potential disciplinary measures under the established regulations.
This action comes in response to directives from Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde, who was elected unopposed on December 19 during the winter session. The position had been vacant since July 7, 2022, after the term of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar concluded.
As per sources from the legislature secretariat, this marks the first occasion where such a substantial number of employees—approximately 400—have been requested to explain their absence from this official event. The notices, issued on January 29, stress that attending the Republic Day ceremony is a national obligation and had been mandated through an official announcement. Employees were also instructed to confirm their attendance via biometric registration.
“Upon examining the biometric attendance records, it was determined that you were absent despite this directive. This is a breach of Section 3.1 (1), (2), and (3) of the Maharashtra Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1979,” the notice states.
The employees are required to provide written explanations within three days of receiving the notice. “Failing to offer an explanation will be interpreted as non-compliance, resulting in subsequent disciplinary actions,” the notice warns.
Since taking office, Chairman Ram Shinde has commenced various meetings with officers and staff to improve the operational efficiency of the legislature. According to Maharashtra Legislature Rules, the Legislative Council Chairman possesses supreme authority in both administrative and financial matters. Shinde has reportedly conveyed that he is a “no-nonsense administrator” and will not tolerate breaches of legislative standards or negligence in official duties.
