Has Thirumavalavan Surrendered VCK to DMK for Votes?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Dec 24 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a pointed criticism against the president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Thol Thirumavalavan, accusing him of essentially having “mortgaged” his party to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for a handful of electoral advantages.
In a strongly phrased statement released on Wednesday, BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad remarked that the VCK had devolved into a mere “Villupuram–Chidambaram outpost” (with its two MPs, Thol Thirumavalavan from Chidambaram and D. Ravikumar from Villupuram), asserting that it has lost its independent ideological essence and statewide political aspirations.
He contended that Thirumavalavan’s ongoing partnership with the DMK stands in stark contradiction to the foundational principles that led to the establishment of the VCK, which was meant to advocate for Scheduled Caste rights.
In light of a recent Christmas event in Chennai, Prasad accused the VCK leader of partaking in “opportunistic minority appeasement,” claiming he deliberately avoided discussing the Christian faith while simultaneously making disparaging remarks about Hindu religious symbols and organizations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
The BJP spokesperson argued that such behavior reflects divisive politics aimed at consolidating vote banks rather than fostering social unity.
The statement also charged Thirumavalavan with neglecting to voice concerns on various incidents involving Dalits in Tamil Nadu, including instances of violence, reported atrocities, and the lack of infrastructure in government-run schools and hostels.
According to A.N.S. Prasad, the VCK chief has remained silent on what he termed the DMK government’s “failures” in addressing these pressing issues.
Highlighting financial statistics, the BJP spokesperson claimed that significant funds allocated by the Centre for Scheduled Caste welfare under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) have either gone unutilized or have been misappropriated by the State government.
He presented figures from recent years to argue that despite financial provisions made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure, the outcomes in welfare on the ground have been insufficient.
Prasad also accused Thirumavalavan of serving as a middleman in political negotiations on behalf of the DMK while publicly denouncing other parties, labeling this behavior as “political theatre.”
He concluded by suggesting that if the VCK is no longer inclined to operate independently, it should “openly merge” with the DMK instead of maintaining what he termed a “pretense of social justice politics.”
