New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal early this Tuesday morning, causing tremors across Kolkata and various areas in West Bengal. As reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the seismic event took place at 6:10 a.m. at a depth of 91 kilometres.

The NCS confirmed the earthquake details via the social media platform X, stating, "EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal."

Kolkata is situated in Seismic Zone III, which denotes a moderate earthquake risk. Although the city does not experience significant seismic activity as frequently as regions like Northeast India, The Himalayas, or Gujarat, tremors can occasionally be felt due to nearby seismic activities, such as those in the Bay of Bengal, Nepal, or North-East India.

Shallow earthquakes, occurring at depths of five to ten kilometres, typically result in more substantial damage compared to deeper earthquakes.

This event, despite its moderate magnitude, was located at a greater depth, which mitigated the strength of the tremors experienced at the surface.

The quake caused brief panic among residents, but there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

This incident follows a similar occurrence on January 8, when mild tremors were felt in Kolkata after a powerful earthquake struck Tibet and parts of Nepal. North Bengal also felt tremors, but no significant damage was reported.

Earlier, on February 17, an earthquake measuring 4.0 impacted Delhi, with stronger tremors felt in the capital. The epicentre of the February 17 quake was closer to Delhi, resulting in more intense vibrations.

Authorities are actively monitoring seismic activities in the area, and thus far, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.
