Ahmedabad, April 26 (NationPress) Over 400 illegal immigrants were detained in Ahmedabad and more than 100 in Surat during a significant pre-dawn operation from Friday night to Saturday morning.
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch, alongside the Special Operations Group, Economic Offences Wing, Zone 6, and Headquarters, initiated a large-scale search targeting illegal foreign nationals in the city.
The operation commenced at 3 am on Saturday and resulted in the apprehension of over 400 suspected illegal immigrants, predominantly hailing from Bangladesh.
Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Sharad Singhal informed IANS that this operation was driven by specific intelligence gathered from the Minister of State for Home Affairs and the Director General of Police (DGP) concerning illegal immigrants residing near Chandola in Ahmedabad.
"A total of 457 infiltrators have been arrested, and interrogation is ongoing; all will face deportation," JCP Singhal confirmed.
He added that two FIRs had already been filed by the Crime Branch since April 2024, leading to the arrest of 127 Bangladeshi nationals, with 77 already deported, after which police received further leads about more illegal immigrants in the vicinity.
"Previously, 127 Bangladeshi infiltrators were apprehended through two FIRs, with 70 deported, while the rest of the proceedings are ongoing," he stated.
Authorities disclosed that all detainees were found to possess forged Indian citizenship documents.
"Each had fake citizenship documents, and we will investigate how they were obtained and who assisted in their creation. They will be deported after the investigation concludes," JCP Singhal remarked.
He further mentioned that the deportation process would commence once the interrogation and legal formalities are finalized.
Simultaneously, in Surat, city police conducted extensive searches across six police station areas—Udhana, Katargam, Mahidharpura, Pandesara, Salabatpur, and Limbayat—resulting in the detention of over 100 Bangladeshi citizens.
These individuals had reportedly been residing in the city for years utilizing false documents and engaging in various jobs.
The Surat police's operation began late Friday night and continues. Multiple police teams are interrogating the detainees to determine how they acquired the forged documentation and the duration of their undetected residency in the city.
