New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) Approximately 6.54 crore individuals, representing 1.39 crore households, are residing in slums throughout the nation. As of March 3, 2025, 90.60 lakh homes have been successfully constructed and handed over to slum beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) initiative, as disclosed in Parliament on Monday.

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, informed the Rajya Sabha that this data regarding slum households derives from the last Census conducted in 2011.

According to the Ministry, a total of 118.64 lakh houses have been approved under PMAY-U, with 112.46 lakh projects having commenced construction activities and 90.60 lakh homes completed and delivered to the beneficiaries by March 3, 2025.

The Minister noted that the scheme's duration has been extended until December 31, 2025 to ensure the completion of the sanctioned homes without altering the funding structure and implementation strategy.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has been supporting the States/UTs by offering Central assistance under PMAY-U since June 25, 2015, aimed at providing permanent housing in urban regions, including slums, through four key components: Beneficiary-led individual house construction/enhancements (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR), and Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS).

The completion timeline for projects varies across states, generally taking between 12 to 36 months based on the specific project details outlined in the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs).

MoS Sahu mentioned that insights gained from nine years of PMAY-U implementation have led to a revamping of the initiative, resulting in the launch of PMAY-U 2.0, the 'Housing for All' mission, effective from September 1, 2024, aiming to assist one crore additional eligible beneficiaries.

To date, 30 states/UTs have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), with in principle approval granted for 6.77 lakh houses in these regions, as stated by the MoS.
