Chandigarh, Sep 10 (NationPress) In the midst of the ongoing blame game between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP regarding the catastrophic floods in Punjab, the Congress party has sharply criticized the Bhagwant Mann administration. They accuse the government of ignoring the plight of the citizens as they struggle with one of the worst flood crises in recent history.
Several districts in Punjab, including Gurdaspur and Amritsar, have faced severe impacts, leading to the tragic loss of at least 30 lives and displacing thousands of residents.
Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, in a statement to IANS, condemned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asserting that the AAP government has failed to adequately prepare for such a disastrous scenario.
He characterized Bhagwant Mann as a completely “defunct” Chief Minister who hasn't convened a single Flood Control Board meeting to address the crisis.
“Mann is incapable of managing the situation. Such a Chief Minister has no right to remain in power. He has devastated Punjab. He claims to be from a common household, yet resides in rooms valued at Rs 1.5 lakh. If you truly represent the common people, then Punjab needs to be rescued from you,” stated the Congress MP from Gurdaspur.
He further expressed dissatisfaction with the flood relief allocation of Rs 1,600 from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, deeming it insufficient given the scale of devastation in Punjab.
Recently, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, during a review of flood-affected regions, attributed the floods to illegal mining, claiming it has compromised the integrity of river embankments and exacerbated the disaster. However, Punjab Congress disputed this assertion, arguing that both the Central and state governments share responsibility for the rampant illegal mining in the state, revealing their “collective failure”.
Moreover, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has accused the Mann government of misappropriating Rs 12,000 crore allocated under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF).
In a press conference, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president alleged that the state government diverted SDRF funds for other purposes, leaving the public to fend for themselves. He demanded that a criminal investigation be initiated against government officials for their alleged misappropriation of these funds.
