Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress, is set to visit the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal on January 27. He will be accompanied by a delegation of 10 party leaders to meet with CEO Manoj Agarwal.
According to sources within the Trinamool Congress, an email application requesting the meeting was sent earlier this week. This initiative follows the party's recent triumph in the Supreme Court, where it received directives aimed at ensuring transparency in the verification process for individuals categorized under 'logical discrepancies' during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in West Bengal.
Insider information indicates that the email does not elaborate on specific issues but mentions that the delegation, led by Banerjee, will discuss various critical matters pertaining to the ongoing SIR exercise.
On December 31, Banerjee had previously met with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi, accompanied by the same 10-member delegation. Post-meeting, he criticized the Commission for allegedly harassing citizens under the pretext of 'logical discrepancies,' and insisted that booth-level agents (BLA-2s) should be present during hearings.
In a recent response to the Supreme Court's directives regarding the SIR process, Banerjee asserted that the BJP's strategy in West Bengal has been thwarted.
Speaking to party workers in Barasat, located in the North 24 Parganas district, Banerjee stated that the BJP has lost not just in court but will also face defeat in upcoming elections.
"I am pleased to hear that the Supreme Court has sided with AITC's demands, instructing that the list of logical discrepancies be disclosed. As I understand, BLA 2 will be permitted in the hearing centers. The BJP's SIR strategy has collapsed. One crore names that were at risk of removal from the voters' list have been preserved, and this victory belongs to the people of Bengal. Our voting rights faced threats, but the Supreme Court has delivered a strong rebuke," Banerjee emphasized.
His strong statement came in light of the Supreme Court's order to the Election Commission of India to disclose the identities of those who received notices citing 'logical discrepancies' in their enumeration forms. These lists are to be made available at the Panchayat and Block offices.
