Abhishek Banerjee questioned 6 hours in Kolkata billboard scuffle case, vows SC fight
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee underwent nearly six hours of questioning at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in Kolkata on Wednesday, 14 October, in connection with the 27 August scuffle at his Camac Street office involving party workers, police personnel, and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials. Emerging from the station Wednesday evening, Banerjee declared he would pursue the legal battle all the way to the Supreme Court if required.
What Abhishek Banerjee Said
'What happened on 27 August was on Facebook Live. Mere allegations do not mean anything. I will file a complaint, and an investigation will be conducted based on that complaint. An investigation is going on and the police summoned me for interrogation. I have answered all the questions they have asked. The rest of the legal battle will be on. I will go to the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court in the matter,' said Banerjee, who is the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The August 27 Camac Street Flashpoint
Tension erupted on 27 August when KMC officials, accompanied by police personnel, arrived at Abhishek Banerjee's Camac Street office to remove a billboard. According to police, they allegedly encountered resistance from Trinamool Congress workers led by the MP and other party leaders, resulting in scuffles at the site.
Three first information reports (FIRs) were subsequently registered at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station, with police accusing Trinamool Congress workers of assaulting personnel on duty and attempting to outrage the modesty of a woman police officer. Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha member and senior TMC leader Derek O'Brien, and party leaders Humayun Kabir and Baishwanar Chatterjee have been named in two of the three FIRs. Police have arrested 14 people so far in connection with the clashes.
Banerjee Also Condemns Attack on Mamata Banerjee
Speaking after his questioning, Abhishek Banerjee strongly condemned an alleged knife attack on former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday evening by a woman who claimed to be her niece. 'The incident was very unfortunate. After all she is the former Chief Minister of the state and more importantly a woman. The manner in which she tried to attack the former Chief Minister with a knife was most unfortunate considering that Mamata Banerjee is supposed to be entitled for Z Plus security. If the former Chief Minister had to confront such an attack, the safety of the common people in the state is well imaginable,' Abhishek Banerjee said.
He added that he was present at his Kalighat office when the attack on Mamata Banerjee occurred.
What Happens Next
Abhishek Banerjee has indicated he will file a counter-complaint, and the legal proceedings are expected to escalate through the higher courts. The case places a spotlight on the political tensions between Trinamool Congress and civic authorities in Kolkata ahead of state elections, and could test the party's legal strategy under mounting opposition scrutiny. With 14 arrests already made and multiple FIRs active, the matter is likely to see prolonged litigation.
